Josh Daniel is bringing a first to this month's Mint 400 desert race, the first twin turbo trophy truck. Turbos were banned in desert racing until a year or two ago, when organizers finally said (with some prodding from Ford and their EcoBoost crate motor program) "well if we're calling these classes 'unlimited' classes we really ought to allow turbos." Initially it brought in a smattering of turbo 6's, but Josh Daniel, owner of DanZio Performance, an engine performance specialist shop, has finally decided to strap two snails to a V8 race motor. The end result is an engine that has been dynoed at over 1000 horsepower, making it the most powerful trophy truck engine to date. She's gonna be fast!

Didn't Ivan Stewart race with a Toyota Hilux with a turbocharged 22RE-T years ago? Would that sorta be the same classification?

Still, turbocharged V8s racing through the desert is going to be insane.

It will be interested to see how they hold up. They are supporting the turbos quite high and out to the side, so I wonder if they are relying on the manifold for all the strength to hold it out there or if there will be more bracing of some kind.

Not sure about a 22RE, I know he ran his trophy truck with a 3VZE in the early 90s. Also I don't know when turbos were banned in desert racing, it's possible the ban didn't start until the mid/late 90s.

Anyone know why turbos where banned?

Not really, it was long before I got involved in the sport. Lag issues? Heat issues leading to fires? Reliability problems? Those are the first possible explanations that spring to mind.

I'd assume there will be more bracing. Josh is extremely experienced and thorough.

You think they'd ban based off reliability issues? Seems like it would be more along the Group B lines, and trying to keep down the power. But instead of figuring out a nice balance (>X displacement + turbo vs.

Potentially. Unlike in rally if you break down in a desert race it may be more than 24 hours before you're rescued. If there were an inordinate number of issues or turbos were failing in a "dangerous" manner (see: fire) I could see them banning it for that reason. Keeping power down seems unlikely, seeing as the rules for years have essentially said "any engine of any displacement and cylinder count is allowed so long as it runs on pump gas, race gas, diesel (diesels were permitted turbos somewhere around 2008), aviation gas, or natural gas." I believe the SCORE rules also said something about allowing turbine engines.

No nitromethane? What is this, communist Russia?!

The "dangerous failure" theory is a good one. I just thought about reliability issues would cause them to die out in the series, versus being banned.

I'm sure they have a solution, I'm just curious to see what it is.
